Foreword by Heather
Rachel designed this ritual to help lift your spirits and dispel the darkness. She suggests using the strong masculine energy of the Greek/Roman god Apollo for this ritual as he brings a powerful punch of healing but also adds wisdom and knowledge.
Rachel says you will need some representations of the elements for this ritual in the form of soil, incense, candle, and water. The ritual also calls upon the expression of artistic creativity, it doesn’t matter if you have no art abilities at all. The point of the spell is to release your depression in a creative outlet.
This ritual can be done using the items listed below or you can sit quietly in your space and just visualise the whole thing.
You will need:
Small dish of soil
Incense
A candle for south
Small dish of water
A black candle
A white candle
Matches or a lighter
Paper
Pens, crayons, coloured pencils
Food
Drink
Before you start: Place a dish of soil in the North, incense in the East, light a candle in the South and pop a dish of water in the West.
Cast your circle: Walk around in a circle deosil (clockwise) or turn on the spot around if you are limited for space and visualise a soft glowing light forming a circle around you. When the circle is complete visualise, the light forming above you and below you to form a globe.
As you cast the circle say:
Circle of light
Circle of peace
Circle of protection
Circle this place.
Call the quarters: Turn and face each compass direction in turn, starting with the North and working deosil (clockwise). North is earth, East is air, South is fire and West is water. As you face each one say:
Element of Earth, bringing stability and grounding. Please join me in this place.
Blessings of Earth.
Element of Air, bringing peace and clarity. Please join me in this place.
Blessings of Air.
Element of Fire, bringing energy and passion. Please join me in this place.
Blessings of Fire.
Element of Water, bringing emotion and calm. Please join me in this place.
Blessings of Water.
As you light the central candle, say:
I call upon the strong and supportive god, Apollo, and ask that you bring your shining light of strength, guidance and courage to assist me with this rite.
Blessings to you.
Light your black candle and take your piece of a paper and colouring items.
Now draw, it doesn’t matter what it is but allow your depression to channel out of your body and through your hands, into the pens and pencils and onto the paper. It can be an image of whatever you like, allow your intuition to guide you. This artwork is your depression in art form. And no, it doesn’t have to be beautiful or artistic, it doesn’t matter if it looks like a 2-year-old got hold of mum’s makeup bag…
Let it all out and onto the paper.
When you are done take the paper to each of the quarters in turn.
Sprinkle a pinch of soil on the image from north and say:
May the power of the element of North bring stability to my life.
Waft the paper through the incense smoke in the east and say:
May the power of the element of East bring clarity to my thoughts.
Swish the paper above the candle flame in the South (make sure it is safely above it) and say:
May the power of the element of South bring passion and creativity to my life.
Sprinkle a few drops of water from the West onto the paper and say:
May the power of the element of West calm and balance my emotions.
Snuff out the black candle.
Then light the white candle and place your picture in front of it. Sit for a quiet time now and visualise peace filling the void that the depression had previously taken. See your life as peaceful, happy and content.
When you are ready…screw the picture up or tear it into pieces.
Take a sip of your drink, raising your glass to Apollo.
Take a few bites of your food.
Then close the ritual. Face the centre and hold your arms wide, saying:
My thanks to you, great god, Apollo, for your shining your light of true strength, courage and wisdom. Please continue to guide and support me.
With blessings and thanks.
Face each direction in turn starting with West and working widdershins (anti clockwise), saying:
Element of Water, my thanks for lending your energy today.
Blessings of Water.
Element of Fire, my thanks for lending your energy today.
Blessings of Fire.
Element of air, my thanks for lending your energy today.
Blessings of Air.
Element of Earth, my thanks for lending your energy today.
Blessings of Earth.
Then walk the circle widdershins (anti clockwise), saying:
Circle of light
Circle of peace
Circle of protection
Circle this place.
This circle is now open but never broken.
Snuff out the candles.
Pour the water onto the earth.
Pour the rest of your drink and crumble some of your food onto the earth as an offering to Apollo.
The paper pieces can now be disposed of by burying in the soil, throwing into running water (if biodegradable) or putting into the trash.
